This place is not as advertised. First, the case management is very sloppy. Half the time your case management meetings are missed by the case manager. The shelter manager himself is a terrible person. He initiated a policy of having the residents leave for five hours on Saturdays. Women with severe physical handicaps are forced to leave the shelter with their walkers. This was only because the case manager was tired of residents "looking" at her from the dinner table and wanted privacy. Though I recommended repairs to very clear hazards such as the men's bathroom mirror falling down, they were never made weeks later. The beginning week night time manager is also a very rude person who runs the place like a county jail. The list can go on and on. I strongly advise not coming here. At all. They are not interested in helping you, just keeping you around long enough so they can get the required funds so staff can keep their jobs and lead lazy lives. That's the long and the short of it.
Do NOT go to this shelter unless you like to be treated unfairly. In the beginning, they will treat you fair. But once you start to make any progress, that is when they will start playing games with you. They will start to disrespect you and see how far they can go with disrespect. Often, they will make up ridiculous, untrue stories about you in order to write you up. Then they will call you the liar! If you do not hear them wake you up in the early morning the first time... they will automatically write you up. If they do not like the way your *dirty* laundry smells... they will write you up. If another guest is disrespectful to you... they will write you both up. Eventually... with all these silly write-up forms that they write against you... they will kick you back out on to the streets with only one hour to pack up your things and leave. And after you have left this "AwfulPlace", they will keep your mail and not even call you to come pick up your mail. If you stop over to try and collect your mail, they will answer the door and get very disrespectful twords you and even threaten you just for stopping over to collect your mail! They like to bring people over to this "AwfulPlace" just to watch you make great progress in your life, only to watch you fall hard on your face from their hands! It gives them a feeling of power and control over people's lives. They are hypocrites. This is an evil place! You would be wise to stay away from this place!
Inspiring. Warm. Good place. Good people.
ANEW Place is doing good for the Burlington community, but from helping a friend out they seem to turn those in need away if the homeless person can't make an appointment prior to asking for help. While the experience was small bump in the road to providing aid to those with mental health problems, I am optimistic about what can happen in the area.
My new volunteer job, what a blessing.
